Why Watkins opted for less money to stay in KC

While Sammy Watkins has had brilliant postseason moments with the Chiefs over the last two seasons, many assumed he would not be on the roster at his original $21 million cap hit for 2020.

Instead of releasing him, Brett Veach and Watkins were able to agree to a restructured final year, knocking Watkins pay.

Watkins explained his reasoning for taking a cut to stay with the Chiefs on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

“How much money do I need? My family’s taken care of well. Do I want I go to a team and lose and get 1,000 yards with a team that’s sorry? Or do I want to come back with one of the best coaches, the best quarterbacks, the best organization, the best team, the best wideout group — arguably — and come try to fight for another championship.”

The fact that Watkins is willing to give up so much to stay with the Chiefs shows how much players are truly bought into Andy Reid’s system and the trust they have in the organization.

The Chiefs now have their top five receiving leaders from a year ago returning for 2020.
