Way-too-early prediction of the Chiefs’ record for the 2020 NFL season

On Thursday, the NFL released its schedule for the upcoming 2020 NFL season. To the surprise of no one, the defending Super Bowl Champions, Kansas City Chiefs, have the max number of five primetime games. They will have a target on their back all season long but with the Patrick Mahomes led offense and a budding defense, it looks to be another successful campaign in KC.

Week One: Houston Texans 9/10 @7:20 CT

The Chiefs will take on a familiar opponent on the NFL’s opening game. This night will be filled with ceremonies and recognition for the 2019 Super Bowl Champions, but Andy Reid’s team will be ready to play. The Chiefs are six and one in season openers with Andy Reid and nothing will change this year against the Texans. Chiefs 38 Texans 17

Week Two: @ Los Angeles Chargers 9/20 @3:25 CT

After over a week, the Chiefs will head to Los Angeles to take on the Chargers and look to secure another win. The Chargers will be in a transition period at QB and the Chiefs take advantage with a big game defensively. Chiefs 35 Chargers 10

Week Three: @ Baltimore Ravens 9/29 @ 7:15 CT

This game has all the indications of a being a preview for a potential playoff matchup. The two best young QBs in football will square off in a duel. The difference will be in what should be an improved Chiefs defense and how well the Chiefs can stop Lamar Jackson and Baltimore’s ground game. Prime Time Pat comes out and the legion of zoom makes things happen. Chiefs 30 Baltimore 27

Week Four: New England Patriots 10/4 @ 3:25 CT

The Chiefs are going to win this game and they are going to win big. New England still has major questions at the QB position and the offense is still in limbo with not many offseason moves to bolster it. Bill Belichick defenses have given Mahomes trouble in the past, but not this time. Chiefs 33 Patriots 14

Week Five: Las Vegas Raiders 10/11 @ 12:00 CT

The Raiders much like the other teams in the AFC West, looked to add weapons to their offense this offseason to compete with the Chiefs. This game will be tight early on but Mahomes and company come through big time for a huge fourth quarter. Chiefs 42 Raiders 30

Week Six: @ Buffalo Bills 10/15 @7:20 CT

This Thursday night matchup in Buffalo is one of the only games on the schedule that makes me nervous. Sean McDermott’s crew will look to build on the success they had defensively in 2019. This game could be eerily similar to the game against the Indianapolis Colts a year ago. Bills 21 Chiefs 18

Week Seven: @ Denver Broncos 10/25 @3:25 CT

The Chiefs bounce back big against Denver after the loss to Buffalo. Mahomes and company continue domination over Denver and look for rookie, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, to cement himself as RB one in KC. Defensively, Steve Spagnuola ramps up the intensity on Drew Lock and the Chiefs shut down Melvin Gordon and the run game. Chiefs 38 Denver 23

Week Eight: New York Jets 11/01 @12:00 CT

The Jets will be a team that improves in 2020 but they will not yet have what it takes to compete with the Super Bowl Champions. The Jets’ defense will keep it close in the first half but struggle all game on offense. Chiefs 30 Jets 8

Week Nine: Carolina Panthers 11/08 @12:00 CT

The Panthers will be in full tank mode by this point in the season and the Chiefs will take full advantage of it. I expect the Chiefs to put up a lot of points and Tyrann Mathieu to shut down Christian McCaffery. Chiefs 51 Panthers 21

Week 10 Bye

Week Eleven: @ Las Vegas Raiders 11/22 @ 7:20 CT

The Chiefs first trip to Las Vegas should be a fun experience for all fans who travel for the game, as well as the players on the team. Andy Reid will be coming off of a bye and the Chiefs will roll to a victory on the road in primetime. Chiefs 45 Raiders 21

Week Twelve: @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers 11/29 @3:25 CT

In what could be the most highly anticipated game of the season, Patrick Mahomes will take on Tom Brady for potentially the last time. Brady is 2-1 against Mahomes but the record will be tied up after this game. It will be a close game and go to overtime but Mahomes fully takes the reigns from Brady this game. Chiefs 38 Buccaneers 31

Week 13: Denver Broncos 12/6 @7:20 CT

There is nothing like a prime time game at Arrowhead in December and this one could have big playoff implications as well. This is a game that could come down to the fourth quarter but Mahomes and Tyreek Hill will once again be too much for Denver. Chiefs 30 Denver 24

Week 14: @ Miami Dolphins 12/13 @12:00 CT

By this point next season, Miami’s young core should be starting to come along but they will still have a ways to go before they can compete with the Chiefs. Chiefs 35 Dolphins 17

Week 15: @ New Orleans Saints 12/20 @3:25 CT

This game could be the first and last contest between Drew Brees and Patrick Mahomes and I think it lives up the hype. This game will have the potential for an offensive explosion. The Saints will barely edge the Chiefs, but expect to see these teams meet again in February. Saints 34 Chiefs 31

Week 16: Atlanta Falcons 12/27 @12:00 CT

The Chiefs will bounce back with a win over the Falcons at home. Clyde Edwards-Helaire shreds the Falcons run defense and puts the league on alert that KC has more than just the air assault. Chiefs 31 Falcons 14

Week 17: Los Angeles Chargers 1/3 @12:00 CT

This week could just be a rest week because I do expect the Chiefs to be the one seed in the AFC and get a bye. Expect the starters to play but it will be a very vanilla out there. Chiefs 17 Chargers 13

Chiefs final regular season record: 14-2
