Sammy Watkins and DeAndre Hopkins reunion?

The world champion Kansas City Chiefs have many crucial decisions to make this off-season in regards to roster construction. The biggest one is obviously how much Patrick Mahomes is going to make, but there are a number of others pieces that need to be arranged for them to make another run at a title.

One of the pieces in question is Sammy Watkins. Watkins, only 26, is set to be a $21 million dollar cap hit against the Chiefs this season. Additionally, he is set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2021.

Watkins time in Kansas City has been inconsistent to say the least. He will seemingly disappear for long stretches, but then reappear in critical situations. Case in point, just this year Watkins had 6 catches for 85 yards and no touchdowns in the last three regular season games. Then in the three games in the playoffs and Super Bowl he had 14 catches for 288 yards and 1 touchdown. He also won a critical one-on-one match-up against Richard Sherman down the right sideline in the go ahead drive in the Super Bowl.

So, what to do? Well, in a recent tweet by Watkins, he was asking the same thing.

Which garnered this response from superstar wide out and former Clemson teammate, DeAndre Hopkins.

The Chiefs and Texans are familiar trade partners as they worked out a deal this past off-season to send RB Carlos Hyde to the Texans in return for offensive lineman Martinas Rankin.

If the teams were looking to deal again, one viable option could be sending Watkins to the Texans for linebacker Zach Cunningham.

Cunningham was a second round pick for the Texans in 2017 and just finished his best year as a pro. The Chiefs could use an upgrade at LB and the Texans would gain another weapon for Deshaun Watson. The Texans also have the seventh most cap space according to, which would allow for the Watkins cap hit.

The emergence of Mecole Hardman makes this move a little easier for the Chiefs as well. However, it would make signing a free agent or drafting a WR a priority because Demarcus Robinson is set to hit the open market as well.

Coming off a year in which general manager Brett Veach completely gutted and restored the Kansas City defense, I have faith he will be able to make the necessary moves to once again have them make a run at the Super Bowl.
