The Patriots have signed 2015 NFL MVP Cam Newton to a one-year, “incentive-laden” deal worth up to $7.5 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and others.

After the departure of Tom Brady, the Patriots were left with a QB room with 2019 fourth-round pick Jarrett Stidham and veteran backup Brain Hoyer.

Newton, 31, will compete with Stidham for the starting role in New England.

Newton was drafted first overall in the 2011 draft out of Auburn, and won NFL MVP honors in 2015, leading the Panthers to Super Bowl 50 after a 15-1 season.

He was released by Carolina in March after missing 14 games in 2019 due to a Lisfranc injury.

It will be extremely interesting to see how Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels utilize Newton, and how they perform in the post-Brady era.

Many believe 2020 to be the year the Bills take over the AFC East, but New England doesn’t appear ready to fold over and hand them the division.
