Injury update: Drew Brees to return, Fisher questionable for Sunday

Drew Brees is set to start on Sunday after missing four games to due broken ribs, just in time for what appears to be the marquee matchup of the 2020 regular season and a potential Super Bowl LV preview.

Brees is believed to be fully healthy and has been cleared to play by doctors.

Throughout the week, there was speculation that Sunday could be the day that he returned, but there was no confirmation until today, leaving many to wonder whether the Chiefs would see Taysom Hill or Brees under center.

Hill will likely return to his swiss army knife role, and will likely get snaps this weekend in different spots on the offense.

The Saints are competing for the number one seed in the NFC, and getting Brees back will hopefully give them a boost after a tough loss to Philly last week opened the door for Green Bay to control its destiny for the conference’s top spot. They can clinch the NFC South with a win or a Buccaneers loss.

On the Kansas City side, Eric Fisher practiced for the first time this week, which bodes well for Sunday. Mike Remmers has been downgraded to out. DeAndre Baker, Emmanuel Smith, and Stefen Wisniewski have been elevated from the practice squad, and Byron Pringle has been activated from IR, according to the Chiefs’ official Twitter.

Kansas City is also vying for the top spot in their conference, and could clinch as soon at this weekend with a win and losses by Buffalo and Pittsburgh. They have already clinched the AFC West.

As ESPN’s Field Yates pointed out, we rarely get a matchup between two teams this good this late in the season.

No matter how this game goes, both teams will be well-positioned for a deep playoff run, and a shot at a Super Bowl championship.
