The All-Pro safety has made two visits with teams after the Justin Reid deal left him ‘heartbroken’
Chiefs All-Pro safety Tyrann Mathieu lit the world on fire with his play for the Chiefs. Mathieu grabbed 13 interceptions and had 27 pass breakups in his three seasons in Kansas City. But after his contract was up, questions remain unanswered on if these two sides want to run it back together.
The Chiefs signed 25-year-old safety Justin Reid from the Houston Texans, the same team Mathieu came from. Mathieu has stated that he would have “probably” taken the same contract Reid was offered to stay with the team.
Though that deal seemed to rub him the wrong way, Mathieu still seems to be open to the idea of a return to the red and yellow.
One key obstacle to this deal will be the potential salary cap hit. The Chiefs currently have over $18 million in cap space, according to overthecap.com. With Brett Veach as the general manager, Chiefs Kingdom can be more optimistic that a deal can be made with how he has handled the worst cap space situations before.
Mathieu has made his own moves in this free agency. The 29-year-old safety has had an in-person visit with the New Orleans Saints and had a virtual visit with the Philadelphia Eagles.
There can’t be enough stated for what Mathieu has meant to the Chiefs secondary in the last three seasons. He has been not only the leader in the secondary on the field but off of it as well. Chiefs players continue to speak highly of him and defensive end Frank Clark teased a potential return on Instagram.
As free agency continues, Mathieu will continue to get more attention from other franchises, and with the draft weeks away, the Chiefs will need to figure out their intentions for the secondary and possibly have the Honey Badger return to Arrowhead Stadium.
