Patrick Mahomes has never lost to the Denver Broncos and don’t expect that to change this season.
Patrick Lavon Mahomes II is the most talented quarterback in the history of the National Football League, and it’s not really close. In three seasons as the starter in Kansas City, he has won the NFL MVP (2018), a Super Bowl (LIV), Super Bowl MVP, and has been named an All-Pro twice.
That’s not mentioning that he has the most yards, touchdowns, and the best passer rating per start in his career. The best part of it all is that his first start was against the Denver Broncos in 2017 when the Chiefs had locked up the division in Week 17.
Since that time Patrick Mahomes’ Chiefs have not lost a game to the Denver Broncos and he usually saves some great plays against those Broncos. Now that the Broncos have had Vic Fangio for a couple of seasons and have re-tooled the defense, there might be a possibility to slow down Mahomes and the Chiefs’ offense. They’ve accumulated a lot of talent in the defensive secondary in the past couple of seasons.
This season alone they added former All-Pro corner Kyle Fuller from the Chicago Bears and drafted All-American Patrick Surtain from the University of Alabama. On top of those great additions, they have the All-Pro Safety in Justin Simmons who is currently seen as one of the best pure defensive backs in the game.
Now in preparation for the 2021 season will the Broncos be able to slow down Patrick Mahomes?
The short answer is no.
The Chiefs are trying to go undefeated in the new 17 game season and it seems like Mahomes is on a mission to prove he’s the best quarterback in the league. I think he will end up with the 2021 MVP and try to put any rumors to bed that he is the best.
Also, the Chiefs’ offensive staff is the best in the league, so they will have the offense prepared to attack the Broncos. The Chiefs built a new offensive line to help keep Mahomes upright and help make the run game more dynamic. The Chiefs see the Broncos as a bump in the road to getting to a third-straight Super Bowl and will try to showcase all of their arsenal against the division.
I think we’ll see Patrick Mahomes in one game against the Broncos this season, with the second time they play them being in Week 18. The Chiefs will probably have their playoff spot locked up and will rest a majority of the starters in that game. With how the Sunday Night Football game went last season against Denver in week 13, Mahomes and the Chiefs might have this game on the calendar. Below is my prediction for the game against the Broncos in Week 13 in Arrowhead.
Patrick Mahomes vs Denver Week 13 statistics: 23-33 280 yards 3 TD’s 1 INT
I think he tries to test the new secondary early in the game and it bites him with an interception early in the game. Patrick Mahomes then will calm down and have a solid game by getting Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce some scores in the first half.
With the lead later in the game, they rely on the run game more and he throws a play-action touchdown to Cornel Powell near while they are near the goal line. I think it’s a solid outing because I don’t think the Broncos and Chiefs will be in a shootout so the Chiefs would not need to put on the offensive display they normally would.
The Broncos do pose an interesting question in the AFC, it’s solely dependent on the quarterback situation between Teddy Bridgewater and Drew Lock. But for the time being, the Broncos are a question mark and no real threat to the Chiefs. Patrick Mahomes will have an incredible season in 2021 with the Chiefs trying to create balance in their offense as they move later in the season.
