With rumors of Mathieu possibly leaving Kansas City in the offseason, will the Chiefs give Mathieu the extension he desires?
Hello again everyone and welcome to another week of the ArrowChop! This is the column where we look at the positives/negatives of a certain Chiefs/NFL issue and look at both sides of the aisle. Then you, the readers, will come to your conclusions after I lay out the case. So sit back, relax, and enjoy as we break down this week’s hot topic.
Well, if you haven’t been on the Chiefs side of Twitter lately, you’re missing out. I’m sure a lot of people have seen it, but if you haven’t, someone on Twitter asked Mathieu, “are we ever going to get a Tyrann Mathieu extension?” Mathieu replied as shown below
This is gargantuan! Mathieu is one of the leaders on that Chiefs’ defense; he is well needed on that defense on account of the skill and energy he brings. His contract ends after this season. All things considered, will Tyrann Mathieu receive an extension from the Kansas City Chiefs next season? Let’s break down both sides of the aisle to find out:
The Chiefs will sign Mathieu to an extension
This side believes so as such:
Firstly, Mathieu is a prolific player that the Chiefs would never let go of that easily. The stats and accolades speak for themselves. In his two years in Kansas City, Mathieu has totaled 137 tackles (111 solo), six tackles for a loss, two sacks, 21 pass deflections, ten interceptions, and two pick-sixes. He has also allowed a combined 59.5 completion percentage as well.
Thanks to these stats, he has earned a Pro Bowl selection and two All-Pro selections. He was also named to the HOF All-2010s Team and helped the Chiefs win Super Bowl LIV. This alone tells you Veach and the Chiefs
Secondly, this feels like an overreaction more than anything. From what it looks like from an outsider’s perspective, it looks like there’s nothing that would force him to leave. His relationship with the players and staff is great, he starts over 90% of defensive snaps each season on the Chiefs, he’s a captain and many more instances.
If Veach can do one, it’s that he can rework contracts like a magician. He’ll be able to sign Mathieu to a grand deal, and he’ll help the Chiefs win another Super Bowl in the future. Seeing Mathieu leave would be a peculiar sight.
The Chiefs won’t sign Mathieu to an extension
This side believes so as such:
Firstly, money may be a concern for the Chiefs in 2021. As I’m typing this article, the Chiefs only have about $6.3 million in available cap space in 2022. Mathieu is being paid $14.55 million this year alone; the Chiefs would have to do some major contract reworks, or they would have to relinquish someone in the offseason. The Chiefs may not everything reworked in time, and Mathieu may take his talents elsewhere. No one wants that, but it is a possibility.
That is truly the only reason this side has, but it is a strong one. No one can deny the talent he has as a safety; however, as the adage goes, “money talks”. It’ll be an interesting story that’ll be brought up again once the next offseason hits.

Yes He will but it won’t be all guaranteed.
I sure hope KC keeps him!
