ArrowChop: Should the Kansas City Chiefs sign Dede Westbrook?

Hello again everyone and welcome to another week of the ArrowChop! This is the column where we look at the positives/negatives of a certain Chiefs/NFL issue and look at both sides of the aisle. Then you, the readers, will come to your conclusions after I lay out the case. So sit back, relax, and enjoy as we break down this week’s hot topic.

The wide receiver two; the number one talking point with the Chiefs that fans are questioning about who will take that spot. Will it be Mecole Hardman, moving up the depth chart having yet another speed demon on the outside. Will it be Demarcus Robinson or Byron Pringle, surprising everyone and taking charge? Will the Chiefs trade for Julio Jones or Michael Gallup? While these are interesting choices, the Chiefs have their eyes set on someone else.

It was been confirmed by numerous sources that the Chiefs are interested in former Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Dede Westbrook:

Now, with interesting sparking, should the Chiefs sign Dede Westbrook? Let’s break down both sides of the aisle to find out:

The Chiefs should sign Dede Westbrook

This side believes so as such:

Firstly, Dede Westbrook isn’t a bad receiver to start with. In his career with the Jaguars, he had 160 catches for 1720 yards and nine touchdowns. He was third on the team in receiving yards in 2019 (660) and led the team in receiving yards in 2018 (717). Those aren’t bad numbers, especially on the Jaguars during that period.

On Westbrook’s film (using 2019 because he was on IR in 2020), he has shown to be a serviceable wide receiver. He has shown he can high-point the ball with ease, making a good amount of jump catches in his time; he showed that he can make 50/50 catches. He possesses great route running abilities, using his speed and agility to coordinate with that. Westbrook is shifty as well and has the ability to make good cuts, spins, and jukes effortlessly. Of course, he has good hands.

With that said, that moves to the next point. Secondly, Westbrook could work wonders in Reid’s, Bieniemy’s, and Mahomes’s offense. Westbrook has a good amount of speed along with an ability to snag balls out of the air; speed kills, and that’s what this Chiefs’ offense loves (look at Hill and Hardman). He could have a chance to truly show out in Kansas City.

Secondly, the Chiefs signing him would add more competition for the WR2 spot. His signing, from what I can infer, should motivate either Hardman, Pringle, Robinson, or all three to perform at a much higher level than they did last season. Reid and the coaching staff would love one of these wide receivers to step up, but if they don’t, you can expect Westbrook to take the two, Hardman in the slot, and Pringle and Robinson down in the depth chart.

The Chiefs shouldn’t sign Dede Westbrook

This side believes so as such:

Firstly, Westbrook is now an injury liability. Last season, the Jaguars placed Westbrook on IR after suffering a gruesome knee injury after returning a kickoff return in a loss against the Chargers. After re-watching it, it was not pretty and has probably affected his NFL career for the long term. We all remember the injury-riddled tenure of Watkins, so fans are hesitant about the idea of resigning him.

Finally, there are still a ton of options in the trade realm. This includes but is not limited to Michael Gallup and Julio Jones. Jones is obviously a better option than Westbrook; there is no debate. Gallup is having a better career at this exact moment than Westbrook. All three of these would be viable options, but fans would like either Gallup or Jones.
