Here are the stat predictions for Sunday’s game versus the Los Angeles Chargers!
Last week’s game against the Texans was explosive, wasn’t it? The rushing game has now seen the light as Clyde Edwards-Helaire will be leading the charge for that the rest of the season, Mahomes is still elite/unstoppable, our defense has stepped up, our receivers are still destructive, and so on.
Since that game is out of the way, the Chiefs are now set on defeating the Chargers tomorrow. Will Mahomes pass for a motherload of yards against the Chargers’ defense? Will Edwards-Helaire continue to be as dominant as he was last week? Will L’Jarius Sneed lock-down whoever he’s guarding next week? Let’s answer all that and more right now as I predict the stats of tomorrow’s game!
Patrick Mahomes Stat Prediction: 284 yards (passing), 3 touchdowns, 0 interceptions
Mahomes hasn’t thrown more than 256 yards against the Chargers, but believe that he will surpass that yardage on Sunday. Due to Derwin James’ absence, the Chargers secondary has now fallen tremendously as he’s a safety that no one can replace. According to ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez, James has lined up all over the field. Only 24% of his snaps actually came at free safety. Fifty-one percent came at outside linebacker, 19% came at cornerback and 5% came at inside linebacker. He even had 16 snaps as the defensive tackle.
This shows that James is a vital player for that secondary and he’s not a player you can replace easily. Mahomes will have a field day lighting up that battered secondary.
Clyde Edwards-Helaire Stat Prediction: 115 rushing yards, 1 touchdown, 4 catches for 45 yards
If the Chargers can allow over 100 rushing yards to the Bengals, who are still trying to fix everything in that organization, then you can expect a monster game from Helaire. Unlike the Bengals, the Chiefs have a competent offense with an offensive line that was intensified thanks to the addition of former all-pro Kelechi Osemele. They will dominate the Chargers defensive front, yet they may have some issues with Bosa; however, don’t think too much of it. Helaire will still be able to put some moves on him and that entire defense.
Also, expect some screens and quick passes to Helaire as well as Mahomes, and Reid may look to this game to test him out in the passing game. Chiefs fans everywhere should be excited as if Helaire turns out to be deadly in the receiving front, then we might just storm away with the AFC.
Leading Receiver: Travis Kelce: 7 catches, 85 yards, 1 touchdown
Kelce does especially well when facing the Chargers defense. In Week 11 of last season against the Chargers, he caught 7 passes for 92 yards with a touchdown reception; moreover, he leads all receivers in receiving yards through the two games they faced them.
With Derwin James’ absence, we can expect the same result as the last game or even possibly better than it. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he was the leading receiver for the game as well.
Star Defensive Player: Tyrann Mathieu: 6 tackles, 3 assisted tackles, 2 pass deflections, and an interception
If I could name one defensive star that has always gone off against the Chargers, it would be no other than Tyrann Mathieu. He has averaged around six tackles, two assisted tackles, a pick each time he faced of against them in the 2019 season. What does this mean exactly? It means that we’ll probably see him intercept a pass and be utterly destructive on the field. Don’t sleep on the Honey Badger as he’ll go off as he always does this week.
Will Sneed be as lockdown as he was last week?
He’ll still do amazingly this week, but don’t expect this is going to be the second coming of Revis Island as he still has a lot to learn. While he did only allow a 3.5 passer rating against the Texans, their offense was significantly worse due to the absence of Hopkins. The Chargers offense will be better as they have weapons like Keenan Allen and Mike Williams who are good in their own retrospects. This would be a good first test for him to solidify himself as one of the premier rookie corners in the league.
