This week on the Power Rankings Digest I am going to take my best educated guess at the Chiefs final 53 man roster. While this may not seem like a power ranking, it is. Essentially, I am ranking the best 53 players on the roster.
Considering we have been able to see one practice streamed on YouTube and zero preseason games, this is all complete speculation based on reports coming out of camp. There have been numerous battles to keep an eye on, including, wide receiver, cornerback, and defensive line. There is always a surprise cut, but with such limited off-season activity, you may see less of this because it will be harder for rookies and undrafted guys to make a splash.
This is a deep roster. A lot of spots have been solidified since the Super Bowl. The Chiefs also had an off-season that baffled every none Chiefs fan with their ability to lock up and bring back all their core players. Guys like Mahomes, Clark, Mathieu, Hill, Kelce are a lock. Its the fringe guys that will be tricky to figure out. Let’s give it our best go..here it is.
Quarterback (3):
Patrick Mahomes
Chad Henne
Matt Moore
Running Back (4):
Clyde Edwards-Helaire
Darrel Williams
DeAndre Washington
Darwin Thompson
*One of the surprises I could see is the Chiefs releasing Darwin Thompson. I don’t think it is likely because they invested a 5th round pick in him only a year ago, but I think they really like Williams and Washington and only carried three RBs in multiple games last year.
FB (1):
Anthony Sherman
TE (3):
Travis Kelce
Nick Keizer
Ricky Seals-Jones
Wide Receiver (6):
Tyreek Hill
Sammy Watkins
Demarcus Robinson
Mecole Hardman
Byron Pringle
Marcus Kemp
*The sixth WR spot goes to Kemp because of his ability to play special teams. He also flashed as a WR last year before his injury. He took multiple reps with the first team in the practice that was streamed on YouTube.
Offensive Line (9):
Eric Fisher
Kelechi Osemele
Austin Reiter
Andrew Wylie
Mitchell Schwartz
Mike Remmers
Greg Senat
Nick Allegretti
Daniel Kilgore
*This is one of the toughest projections. If/when Rankin comes back from injury he is going to make the roster. Also, Kilgore makes it interesting for Allegretti and where he fits in.
Specialist (3):
Harrison Butker
James Winchester
Tommy Townsend
Defensive Line (9):
Frank Clark
Chris Jones
Derrick Nnadi
Khalen Saunders
Tanoh Kpassognoh
Alex Okafor
Mike Danna
Breeland Speaks
Taco Charlton
*Mike Pennel comes back from suspension after week 2. This one is extremely tough. Tershawn Wharton is reported to have a chance to make this roster. Demone Harris was solid last year and played in the playoffs. Danna is a wildcard.
Linebackers (5):
Anthony Hitchens
Damien Wilson
Ben Niemann
Willie Gay Jr.
Dorian O’Daniel
Defensive Back (9):
Tyrann Mathieu
Juan Thornhill
Daniel Sorenson
Armani Watts
Adrian Colbert
Charvarius Ward
L’Jarius Sneed
Rashad Fenton
Antonio Hamilton
*Bashaud Breelend is suspended for the first four games. When he comes back someone like Adrian Colbert may find himself off the 53. This leaves off guys like Tedric Thompson and BoPete Keyes. Very tough decisions are coming down the hatch for the Chiefs.
This is a loaded roster from top to bottom. Brett Veach, Andy Reid, and the Chiefs front office have done an incredible job creating it. They have some tough decisions coming and I am sure they will make the right ones.
