After winning Super Bowl MVP in 2019, we take a look at what we expect from Patrick Mahomes going into his 3rd season as the starter in Kansas City.
What more can you ask for? I mean with Patrick Mahomes only having two seasons as the starter in Kansas City the superstar QB has a MVP season with 5,000+ yards and 50 TDs. In the other, he wins the Super Bowl and is named Super Bowl MVP. You can guess that everyone is going to expect incredible things for the rest of his career moving forward. The Chiefs are the Vegas favorite to repeat as Super Bowl Champions and reason number one is because of Patrick Mahomes. Let’s dive into some predictions that I have for Mahomes coming into the 2020 season.
My first prediction is that Mahomes is going to throw for 4800 yards and 45 TDs.
I think this is more than doable for Mahomes considering what they have coming into the season next year. They drafted a very versatile RB in Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who should be right in the mix as soon as training camp starts. Look for him to play a vital role in the Chiefs offense during this season. We also have the great receiving core returning in Sammy Watkins, Travis Kelce, Tyreek Hill, and Mecole Hardman. There is no denying how dynamic the Chiefs are on the outside and this obviously helps Mahomes’ production. Lastly, and I think this might be the most important part, is that Eric Bieniemy is returning as Offensive Coordinator for the Chiefs. Having another year in this same system Mahomes has flourished in can only help him grow as a player and help his thought processing even more. This is one thing I think most people take for granted, but benefits Mahomes exponentially. Look for Mahomes to take NFL defenses by storm again in 2020.
My second prediction is that Mahomes will lead the Chiefs to at least 12 wins.
The Chiefs I think have a pretty easy road to the playoffs and another division title this year. The Chiefs ranked 6th in the NFL last year as having the toughest schedule based on 2019 opponents wins and losses per sportingnews.com. This season, based on those same wins and losses from 2019, the Chiefs have the 14th easiest schedule in the NFL per nbcsports.com. I do think the Chargers and Broncos are much improved, but we all know that the Chiefs since being under Andy Reid have owned the AFC West. Not saying they won’t be tough because we all know division games are tough, but don’t expect the Chiefs to lose a step. With Mahomes lighting up the league again as referenced by my first prediction, expect him to keep rolling like he was last year and keep putting a ton of points on the board.
My third and final prediction is that Patrick Mahomes will be the NFL MVP.
Listen, we all realize here how great Patrick Mahomes is, but I think the NFL media to an extent forgot about how great Mahomes really is. When Mahomes went down it was almost like he was an after thought and then compounded with how great Lamar Jackson was last year, people seemed to treat Mahomes like he was an after thought. Then the playoffs happened. We had never seen Mahomes play much better than he did in route to the Chiefs winning the Super Bowl. He was absolutely lighting it up on Houston, Tennessee, and then when the Chiefs needed him the most in the biggest game of his career, he stepped up and delivered a performance like only an MVP can do. With how last season ended, I expect another phenomenal one in return. Mahomes won’t let this team have a Super Bowl hangover. I expect the Chiefs to come out like they are already halfway into the season in Week 1. We see Mahomes’s leadership on display constantly throughout games. Whether he is trying to get his guys rolling or cheering on the defense as they are making plays while he is on the sideline. Coming off the championship, I wouldn’t be surprised if Mahomes isn’t more motivated than he has ever been. I think a lot of people are going to expect a drop-off in production, but there’s just not a scenario I could see that happening unless he gets injured during the season.
We are all accustomed to Patrick Mahomes just being otherworldly when it comes to playing QB. He is the best QB in the NFL with good reason. There isn’t a throw that he can’t make, we saw him make a lot of plays on his feet during the playoffs, and he is able to just command the locker room. Having all of this talent at such a young age is incredible because we are expecting 15+ years of just crazy production. I can tell you one thing though, expect Mahomes to absolutely destroy defenses again, and in my eyes, be the NFL MVP once again.
I absolutely loved your article and agree with you completely. I think Patrick Mahomes is fantastic. I can’t wait for football season to start. I’m disappointed that NFL channel pulled out of Dish provider. I miss getting all the news and updates. I always enjoy reading about the Chiefs especially from a fan and accomplished writer.
