The NFL has cut the preseason in half, cancelling weeks one and four of the preseason, per Pro Football Talk.
The move comes just a week after the Hall of Fame game, scheduled for August 6, was cancelled.
Mike Florio reports the move should become official in a league announcement Thursday.
Cutting weeks one and four are an interesting decision, but those are usually the two games that involve the least amount of action from starters.
Players will also have more time to get back in shape, which Kevin Seifert reports contributed to the decision as well.
The first preseason game will now take place on August 20, when the Panthers play the Patriots in New England.
For Kansas City, the preseason now consists of two road games, first in Arizona on August 22, and in Dallas on August 29.
