The Cam Newton signing has been the talk of the league since the news broke on Sunday, and many are saying the Patriots are ready to contend for the Super Bowl.
Emmanuel Acho already believed in the Pats before adding Newton, and former executive Michael Lombardi say the Pats can hang with anyone.
Quotes are from OMF on WEEI Sports Radio Network.
“And the way they have to play, can they beat Kansas City? I think that is the ultimate — can they beat the top teams in the league?”
“I think they can – I do.”
While all eyes will be on Newton and the Patriot offense, Lombardi adds that what might make or break this Patriots team is special teams.
“A lot of it is going to come down to their kicker and how good he is, right? Because he’s a rookie.”
The Pats let Nick Folk walk and released Stephen Gostowski this offseason, drafting Justin Rohrwasser out of Marshall in the fifth round to fill that role.
If anyone doubts the importance of special teams, take a look at the 2010 Chargers.
All in all, whether or not Newton can return to his MVP level of play, or anywhere near it, will play a large role in how much of a contender the Patriots are in the AFC.
