Recapping Kansas City Chiefs Day 1 of the 2020 NFL Draft

The Kansas City Chiefs stayed put at pick 32 instead of moving up for Henry Ruggs III or trading back due to a league low 5 picks in the draft. Round 1 saw some surprises from teams compared to what was being reported by the media. The media this year more than ever seemed to not have a clue as to what was going on this year. That made this draft a bit more exciting due to surprises and seeing other great players fall down the board. The Kansas City Chiefs had the luxury with the 32nd pick of sitting and waiting to see how the board fell. I am sure if their guy was not there at that time they would have looked harder for trade offers. However, the Chiefs stayed at pick 32 to make their selection.

With the 32nd pick in the 2020 NFL draft, the Kansas City Chiefs selected RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire out of LSU. The Chiefs decided to burn the league alive and give Patrick Mahomes the best pass catching back in the draft, yes even better than D’andre Swift. Many analysts such as Chris Simms had Edwards-Helaire ranked higher than other backs like D’andre Swift, Jonathan Taylor, or JK Dobbins. Clyde the Glide is not just a one dimensional back either, as he can run inside and outside the tackles with comfort. He is dangerous in open space making him a lethal screen catcher. Tacklers bounce off of him due to his low center of gravity. The only true knock on his game is his top end speed where he ran a 4.6 40 yard-dash at the combine. He is well built at 5’7 and 207lbs, to withstand the workload of a 3 down back. The Chiefs may let Damian Williams take the lead back for the beginning part of the season but Edwards-Helaire is just too good and talented to sit or hide for too long.

Many Chiefs fans may push back initially at the selection considering their were options for Corner, Linebacker, and EDGE. Clearly Andy Reid and Brett Veach saw something in the young back to take him with the 1st selection they had. They haven’t been too wrong yet on a pick, plus this gives Mahomes and that offense a better, more reliable way to run their offense and drain the clock to help the defense get rest between drives. Overall this was a great selection especially since the Chiefs are in repeat mode and this move proves that. Giving Mahomes even more weapons to destroy the league with is going to be amazing to watch.
