Henne or Ta’amu: Who is the backup to Patrick Mahomes?

This offseason, the Kansas City Chiefs have crated a QB competition. However, it is for the backup role to 2018 NFL MVP and Super Bowl LIV MVP, Patrick Mahomes.

The Chiefs started out the offseason by signing Chad Henne to a new two-year deal over Matt Moore, who went 1-1 as a starter last season, when Mahomes went down. Over his career, Henne has 12,960 passing yards and 58 touchdowns with Miami, Jacksonville, and Kansas City.

The Chiefs also went out and signed QB Jordan Ta’amu. The former Ole Miss QB played for the St. Louis Battlehawks of the XFL. During his five games with the Battlehawks, Ta’amu threw for 1,050 yards and five touchdowns. He also added 217 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Last season proved the need for an efficient backup quarterback for the Chiefs when Mahomes went down with his knee injury. Who is more likely to land the No. 2 spot on the depth chart at the start of the season?

First, both players will be on the 55-man roster with newly-signed QB Shea Patterson on the practice squad, following the release of Kyle Shurmur. Henne brings veteran experience to the roster and Ta’amu brings big play ability with his strong arm and running capabilities.

To start off the year, I think it is going to be Henne in the event of an early injury to Mahomes (please no). This would allow Ta’amu time to learn the system and be prepared to take over that spot later in the season or in 2021.
