ESPN Draft Insider pegs top RB prospect to KC in recent mock

On February 3rd, ESPN Senior Writer Todd McShay released his second version of his round 1 NFL mock draft. With the first and second picks, there is really no surprise: Joe Burrow and Chase Young, respectively. However, there may be some surprise with who he has the defending Superbowl champs taking. At pick 32 he has the Chiefs taking RB J.K. Dobbins out of Ohio State. Here is what McShay had to say about the pick:

Watching Damien Williams scamper for a 38-yard Super Bowl-clinching touchdown run late in the fourth quarter, you might not remember that the six-year vet led the Chiefs in rushing in 2019 … with 498 yards. Indeed, the high-octane Kansas City offense ran through the arm of Patrick Mahomes, leaving a No. 23-ranked run game averaging less than 100 yards per game in its wake. Williams flashed at times, and 2019 sixth-rounder Darwin Thompson has promise, but coach Andy Reid covets a unique playmaker like Dobbins at the position. Dobbins is tough to bring down and quick when he hits the hole, breaking 2,000 rushing yards this past season and scoring 21 times on the ground. There isn’t any cornerback value here (maybe LSU’s Kristian Fulton), so even with three key players at the position hitting free agency, I’m opting to catch the run game up with Mahomes’ unstoppable passing attack.

Now I do think he makes a fair point about the cornerback value possibly not being there at 32, but this seems to me like it would be a slap in the face of Damien Williams. Williams, who probably should’ve been Superbowl MVP, has been a difference-maker in every playoff game dating back to last year’s AFC Championship game. I’m not saying that the Chiefs shouldn’t take a RB. In today’s NFL you have to have more than one, and with LeSean McCoy and Spencer Ware probably not coming back, the Chiefs will have to add one or two players to the position. That player shouldn’t come at pick 32.

Come draft day, if the Chiefs can’t land on the right player for the value of pick 32, then they should trade back and collect more picks. A RB at that spot is not needed and may set a bad precedent in the locker-room. For a guy like Williams, what else could they want from him? He has been a clutch performer for this team since Kareem Hunt left and they reward him by drafting a guy to take carries from him? It is not a good look for the organization, and I don’t think Andy Reid or Brett Veach would make that move. It should be noted that in Todd McShay’s December mock draft, he had the Chiefs taking cornerback Kristian Fulton out of LSU. However, he also had the Chiefs picking 28th instead of 32nd. So, maybe he doesn’t know what he’s talking about after all.
