Chiefs steal No. 2 seed; 1st-Round Bye from Patriots

The odds were stacked against the Kansas City Chiefs for being the No. 2 seed in the AFC playoffs, with having to defeat the Los Angeles Chargers, and the Miami Dolphins needed to defeat the New England Patriots in Foxborough.

The Chiefs took care of business themselves by a score of 31-21. The team was led by running back Damien Williams, who had 124 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 12 carries. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes eclipsed 4,000 passing yards on the season, as he threw for 174 yards and one touchdown to wide receiver Demarcus Robinson. The Chiefs defense was strong once again, collecting three sacks on the day and picked off Phillip Rivers twice. The other side of the equation, Dolphins upsetting the Patriots, had to happen.

The Dolphins kept it close the whole game, leading the entire first half until a late touchdown, right before the two-minute warning, by the Patriots. The Dolphins lone touchdown was a pick-six by former Patriot, Eric Rowe. The second half was a different story for the Dolphins as quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick ran for a touchdown to tie the ball game, heading into the final 15 minutes of play. James White would give the Patriots a 24-20 lead with 3:53 to play. Fitzpatrick and the Dolphins offense charged down the field and showcased the “Fitzmagic” as he would throw a touchdown pass to tight end Mike Gesicki with 24 seconds remaining. The Dolphins defense would hold on and upset the defending Super Bowl Champions and drop them to the No. 3 seed in the AFC.

With both sides of the equation falling into place, the Chiefs claim the No. 2 seed in the AFC and clinch the 1st-round bye, moving to the Divisional Round. With the loss, the Patriots host the Tennessee Titans on January 4th. The Chiefs will host the Patriots if they defeat the Titans, but if the Titans were to defeat the Patriots, the Chiefs would host the winner of the Wild Card game between the Houston Texans and Buffalo Bills. After ending the regular season on a six-game winning streak, the Chiefs get to host another Divisional Round game at Arrowhead on January 12th.
