Chiefs sign OG Joe Thuney

The Chiefs have made their move. In the previous few days, the Chiefs have been reworking deals and freeing up cap space. Now, they will spend that money on former Patriot Joe Thuney. It’s a five-year, $80 million deal.

Thuney was considered one of the best free agents available, and the Chiefs needed to bolster their line after releasing longtime starting tackles Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz last week.

The 28-year-old was a third-round pick out of NC State in 2016 and has been a consistent force on New England’s offensive line over the last five seasons. He played every snap in each of his first three seasons and was on the field for 99% and 97% of the Pats offensive snaps in 2019 and 2020, respectively.

Patrick Mahomes seems happy with the move.

The deal includes $32.5 million fully guaranteed and a year three injury guarantee that converts to a full guarantee in year 2, making it $48 million fully guaranteed.

According to Field Yates, the structure of the contract leaves money on the table if KC wishes to pursue other free agents.
