NFL Draft

Chiefs select Clyde Edwards-Helaire at pick 32

The Kansas City Chiefs decided to stand pat at 32 and selected LSU RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

Edwards-Helaire was the only running back selected in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, and was the first RB taken by the Chiefs in the first round since 2003 when they took Larry Johnson.

Among the top running backs, Edwards-Helaire is the best fit for this Chiefs offense, as his versatility, vision, and speed will be a valuable asset for Andy Reid and Eric Bieniemy.

The pick was surprising to some given the amount of defensive talent still on the board, but the Chiefs chose to add to an already explosive offense and give Patrick Mahomes yet another weapon.

According to Pete Sweeney, the pick was a no-doubter for the team.

While the Chiefs running back room will be crowded in 2020, there were no sure bets beyond that. Damien Williams and DeAndre Washington’s contracts are up after 2020, and Darrel Williams is set to be a restricted free agent. The Chiefs see Edwards-Helaire as a long-term solution at the position.

The Chiefs have four more selections in the NFL Draft, two on Friday and two on Saturday, barring any trades. Day two begins tomorrow at 6 p.m. CT.
