Chiefs news roundup

During the offseason, things get slow. Let’s review what happened this last week in Kansas City, Chiefs related.

Apart from the trade rumors and draft mocks swirling around, let’s begin with some fun news.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes and his longtime girlfriend Brittany Matthews kept the due date under the radar but they officially took to Instagram last weekend to announce that their baby girl Sterling Skye Mahomes was born on Saturday, February 20th.

However, Patrick Mahomes isn’t the only player for the Kansas City Chiefs who welcomed a new baby. Chiefs DB Armani Watts also shared the exciting news of welcoming a new baby girl, Leia Rey, a future Star wars fan apparently, was born on Friday, February 19th.

While the players are providing some new young fans to the Chiefs Kingdom, an old acquaintance could be back on the team.

Well, for many years, he was one of the best pass rushers for the K.C. Chiefs defense. After eight seasons with the team that drafted him, Justin Houston was let go and signed with the Indianapolis Colts.

With Steve Spagnuolo at the helm of the defense, the Chiefs completely turned around the defense in 2019, trying to get better results. With Frank Clark, Tyrann Mathieu, Alex Okafor, and Emmanuel Ogbah, the revamped defense got better and better.

However, Justin Houston took the release very personally at the time and got very vocal against the Kansas City Chiefs.

For the last two seasons, Houston has started all 32 games for the Colts, providing them with a proven pass rusher and veteran leader who can help grow a young defense in the AFC South. But he is now a free agent again and many commentators see him back in Kansas City to fill a defensive void coming from free agency and contract endings.

Is Houston still a starter though and would he fit the Spagnuolo system?  He is a strong leader for sure and he still has gas in the tank to help the pass rush. Let’s wait and see.

On the other hand, Wednesday, Chiefs offensive tackle Mitchell Schwartz said on social media that he underwent surgery for a back injury that prematurely ended his season in 2020. It was exceptional as he did not miss a single snap since 2019 ending then an impressive streak.

“I was hoping to recover enough during the season to get back on the field, especially for the playoffs and Super Bowl, but that never happened,” Schwartz wrote on his Instagram account.

“It’s time to address the issue since it isn’t going away on its own,” he wrote. “The recovery process isn’t too long, hence being able to wait until now to do it, otherwise I would have done this earlier.”

“Looking forward to a healthy 2021!” he wrote.

So that’s a good indication he does not want to retire just yet.

Chris Jones actually celebrated the formation of the Sack Nation Foundation on Tuesday with a donation to the YMCA of Greater Kansas City.

The goal of the Sack Nation Foundation is “to improve the health and well-being of young people in underserved communities,” according to a press release announcing the foundation’s creation.

“I was once in those communities, and I definitely understand those situations,” Jones said. “My vision is to bring resources and people together in a positive way that ultimately improves the overall quality of life.”

Thanks to Jones’ donation, 300 children from the YMCA and their siblings will be able to participate in flag football. He plans many events throughout Kansas City, in St. Joseph during Chiefs training camp, and in his hometown of Houston, Mississippi.

That wraps up the Chiefs news for this week. We will certainly get more and more hype for the 2021 draft in the coming weeks and keep you updated.
