The Chiefs have signed punter Tyler Newsome to a one-year deal.
Newsome went undrafted out of Notre Dame in 2019, where he averaged 44 yards per punt, and signed with the Chargers. He was waived after spending the preseason with the team, where he punted seven times for an average of 42.1 yards and a net of 34.4.
This marks the second straight off-season the Chiefs have brought in a second punter, having brought in Jack Fox last year. Fox even spent a short time on the practice squad last season.
The move makes sense, with longtime punter Dustin Colquitt entering the final year of his contract and his age-38 season. If 2020 is the final season for Colquitt, Newsome could potentially step in as his successor.
