According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL, the Chiefs have yet to make an offer to their star DL Chris Jones. The Chiefs placed the franchise tag on Jones back in late February. However, the lack of activity with Jones should not be concerning to Chiefs fans. The Chiefs have until July 15 to ink a long-term deal with Jones. This gives them plenty of time to work something out after the draft. If no deal is reached by that point, Jones would be forced to play under the tag for 2020.
There is always the possibility that the Chiefs could work a trade for Jones, but this option seems very unlikely. The draft is just a few weeks away and if the Chiefs were shopping Jones, rumors would likely have been swirling by now. Also, both sides indicate they would like to reach a deal.
Inking a deal prior to July 15 makes the most sense for the Chiefs. This could provide them with even more cap space needed for the high-profile Mahomes contract since they would likely back-load Jones’ deal. Also, Jones is a rare talent and excellent fit in their locker room. Jones was pivotal in the Chiefs’ Super Bowl run last year and all signs are pointing toward Veach trying to bring most of the band back together for another run in 2020.
