That headline should say it all, but if that’s not enough let me explain.
The day Andy Reid was hired as head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs I tweeted how horrible I thought the hire was. When John Dorsey was fired I wrote an article for another site of how they fired the wrong guy. I’m sorry Andy, I was wrong,.
I said that Patrick Mahomes would need to overcome Andy because he couldn’t get the job done. Tonight proved me very wrong.
As much as I love Mahomes and want to give him all the credit, I just have to give credit to Andy. After 20 seasons as a head coach in the NFL he changed who he was.
He fired a close friend in Bob Sutton. He hired a coach outside of the current staff for the first time in his career in Steve Spagnuolo. I didn’t like the hire because it was still in the Andy tree, but it worked to perfection.
Andy went for it on fourth down multiple times in this game when he would have taken the field goal in years past. He trusted Brett Veach to do his job and accepted the players he chose.
I said for six years Andy was too conservative and it took Mahomes to overcome Andy. I was wrong. Andy coached an amazing season and a great game tonight. He kept the pressure on the San Francisco 49ers all night long and controlled the clock perfectly.
I am sorry for ever questioning you Andy. I am sorry for saying if they didn’t make it to the Super Bowl this season you should be fired. Today I will happily sign off on you getting a lifetime contract as the Chiefs head coach. You brought a Lombardi Trophy to Kansas City for the first time in 50 years.
You are truly a Hall of Fame head coach and you are a hero to all of Kansas City. I hope one day they build a statue of you somewhere around Arrowhead Stadium. You have made me proud and somewhere Lamar Hunt is smiling. I am sorry for ever doubting you Andy.
From the bottom of my heart as a Chiefs’ fan since I was born in 1982, thank you Andy. Thank you for being you and doing what you said you would do. You should never buy a cheeseburger in Kansas City again.
