The idea of Kansas City trading this offseason doesn’t seams like crazy talk. I mean we are about to play the Houston Texans in the divisional round. Why am I thinking about the off season?? Well the truth is, the Kansas City Chiefs do have some holes that they could address in the off season. There are a number of players that are entering free agency which changes which positions are in demand and might be worth trading for if the Chiefs don’t think they will be able to land a free agent.
At the time of writing this article I think the following positions have some depth in free agency which would encourage teams to look to free agency or the draft to fill these position:
- 3 – 4 OLB
Lucky for the Chiefs, they aren’t in need of a QB, not to mention, the current backups probably won’t cost much to keep around. However, wouldn’t it be cool if Tom Brady came to KC as a backup primarily as a mentor to Patrick Mahomes? Maybe I will write about this later. The Chiefs are also rather stacked at WR and hope to sell Sammy Watkins this off season. The Chiefs also don’t run a 3 – 4 base defense, and lets be honest, we all have high hopes for Darwin Thompson.
Another factor to keep in mind, is how many draft picks the Kansas City Chiefs have in 2020. Unless they toss in a player to sweeten a deal or send off some other players for draft picks, I don’t see them having a lot of trade stock this year.
What positions aren’t as deep in free agency and are also holes on the team that the Chiefs should target?
Yes the Chief’s defense has been a lot better, this year. However it usually takes about two years for a team to rebuild. This would the be second year under Spagnuolo, so I promise there will be a lot more movement on the defense this offseason.
It is easy to just shoot for the moon at each position, or also just pick a name out of a hat. However, I’m going to be looking at a few criteria for why I selected the following players as trade targets. First, are they a position of need for the Chiefs? Second, is the players I am hoping to trade for on a team that would realistically trade with the Chiefs. Sorry, no trades within the AFC West or contenders in the AFC. Third, is the the team the player coming from in transition?
Rock Ya-Sin, CB
Rock Ya-Sin was drafted in the 2019 draft as a second rounder. The Colts were thought to be a contender before Andrew Luck retired. Even after he retired, they appeared to be doing pretty good. However, they lost 5 of their last 6 games and might be in need of going up to get a QB. If the Chiefs could trade their 4th round pick and Sammy Watkins for Rock Ya-Sin. A young player who did pretty good, and still under a rookie contract. Yes I think this is far fetched, but I like it!
Mike Edwards, Safety
I know what you might be thinking, Mike Edwards?? He wasn’t that good this year. I would agree that he had sound rough times in his first year with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, the Chiefs will be without Juan Thornhill for most if not all of the 2020 season. That being said, I think they should look to grab a player who might be considered a bust for the draft spot, and allow the Chiefs to get a steal. I would say the Chiefs should offer a 5th round pick and if they want more, toss in Sammy Watkins. Are you noticing a trend?
Kevin Zeitler, Guard
With the New York Giants cleaning house it is a great time to come checking on players. Especially players that are a little older, and could save the team some cap space. Kevin Zeitler meets all of these. He is 29 years old, near the back half of his career, and could save the Giants, up to $7 million in cap space. Kevin has been a strong guard and a proven asset. I think the Chiefs could give up a 5th round pick or even just trade Sammy Watkins straight up. The Giant could use the WR help.
